Champion Standing

So, I’m collaborating with author David J. Roth, Jr. For a novel-length period piece very tentatively named Champion Standing. The first draft is done, so we’ve started on the first rewrite. I expect the story to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 65,000 words. The story is still being fine tuned, but here is the current iteration of the story synopsis:

The story takes place during the first decade of the Common Era. A Han Dynasty warrior has slain the Han Emperor in a blood feud – revenge against the emperor who killed his wife. It is revealed the slain emperor was conspiring to sell off the dynasty to the Romans. He was merely a Roman puppet. The warrior is exiled so his clan and supporters are expunged from the Han Dynasty. He becomes a mercenary for the Kingdom of Kush, where he performs in an exemplary manner for his Nubian employers. After a few years, the new Emperor, invites the warrior to return to the Han Dynasty to compete in a five day Dao (sword) Tournament. This tournament has the potential to restore honor to the warrior’s clan, but the Romans want a new puppet Emperor and conspires with tournament participants to assassinate the emperor and the warrior. The entirety of the story takes place during the five-day tournament.

Pretty cool, eh? I’m excited about the project and expect the first rewrite to be concluded before the end of the year. Then come beta readers, editing, additional rewrites and oh, did I mention editing? We’ll need to do that a few times.
