Lots of stuff going on these days. My semester taking a comparative religion course is half over. I’m a total nerd when it comes to this kind of stuff. I had considered myself open and had learned quite a bit about non-Christian religions. I could easily wrap my brain around the five we’ve already covered (Islam, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism & Buddhism.) I had studied Confucianism while doing research for Champion Standng and grew up in a white Christian household (Baptist, actually) and I’ve had coworkers who were devout Buddhists and practicing Muslims. I’ve always been curious about other religions, but this class is amazing. The instructor did her doctoral thesis in Santaria, the sometimes derogatory name of the Yoruban religion originating in West Africa. This week we started the Yoruba and the three major branches (including Santeria.) the instructor is very passionate about Santeria and I only wish we had more time to get into each of these religions in greater detail. Today, the instructor said, “I could teach each of these singular religions and it would take up the entire semester.” Or words to that effect. If tuition wasn’t so expensive, I’d almost take her up on that. Anyway, enough rambling – time to get to bed for work tomorrow.
